Fitting your first roof box can seem daunting, but with proper guidance, it’s a straightforward process. This tutorial is specifically designed for first-time users, breaking down each step with clear explanations.
What You’ll Need
- Your roof box (obviously!)
- Roof bars already installed on your car
- Box manual (keep it handy)
- A helper (optional but recommended for first time)
- 45-60 minutes of time
- Level parking area
Step-by-Step First-Time Fitting
Step 1: Prepare the Box (5 minutes)
Before lifting, open all mounting clamps completely. This makes installation much easier. Check you have all parts – typically 4 U-bolt clamps or quick-mount systems.
Step 2: Lift and Position (10 minutes)
Solo method: Lift rear of box onto roof first, then push forward while lifting the front. Slide over the roof bars into position.
With helper: One person each end, lift together and place directly onto bars. Much easier and safer for your first time.
Positioning tip: Center the box left-to-right. Position slightly forward of center (about 60/40 split) for best aerodynamics.
Step 3: Secure Front Clamps (10 minutes)
Open the box lid to access internal clamps. Position front clamps over the front roof bar. Hand-tighten first, then use the provided tool. Alternate between left and right sides for even pressure.
How tight? Firm resistance but don’t over-tighten. The box shouldn’t budge when pushed, but you shouldn’t strain when tightening.
Step 4: Secure Rear Clamps (10 minutes)
Repeat the same process for rear clamps. Make sure the box sits level – not tilted forward or backward.
Step 5: The Shake Test (5 minutes)
This is crucial! Stand at front and firmly try to:
- Push the box backwards
- Lift the front upwards
- Move it side to side
- Repeat at the rear
If the box moves even slightly, it’s NOT secure. Retighten the clamps and test again.
Step 6: Test Drive (15 minutes)
Take a 15-minute local drive before your main journey. Include some motorway speeds if possible. Listen for unusual noises. After the test drive, immediately recheck all clamps – slight loosening after first use is normal.
First-Time Tips
- Allow extra time – don’t rush your first installation
- Read the manual completely before starting
- Take photos of correct installation for future reference
- Mark optimal position with tape for next time
- Don’t be discouraged if it takes longer than 45 minutes first time
