Why bars from one car so rarely fit another, and what to actually check before you buy.
If you’ve ever looked at roof bars on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, you’ve probably wondered why there are so many versions of what looks like the same thing. A Thule WingBar Evo is a Thule WingBar Evo, surely?
Not quite. And understanding why is the key to not wasting money on bars that look promising in photos but won’t actually work with your car. We ran into exactly this problem trying to source used bars for a VW Polo with no roof rails, which is what prompted us to properly untangle how the whole system fits together.
The four parts of a roof bar system
Let’s break down what actually makes a roof bar system work, because the bars themselves are only one piece of it.
The bars are the horizontal pieces that run across your roof. Thule makes several ranges, including WingBar Evo, WingBar Edge, SquareBar and ProBar, and these bars are genuinely pretty modular. A Thule WingBar Evo 127cm is roughly the same bar whether it’s destined for a Polo, a Focus, or a Tesla. The main variation is length, typically 119cm, 127cm or 135cm, and material, either aluminium or steel. The bars themselves don’t know or care what car they’re going on. They’re simply a load carrier.
The foot pack is the part that actually clamps or bolts to the roof at each end. This is where your bars sit, and it’s what connects to your car’s roof structure. Different foot packs suit different attachment methods. A Thule Evo Clamp 7105 is designed to wrap around a roof using a clamping method for cars with no rails. A foot pack designed for a car with existing roof rails looks completely different, because it’s built to sit on top of the rail rather than grip the door frame.
The vehicle-specific fitting kit is the custom piece in all of this. It’s the brackets, adapters and spacers that bridge the gap between your car’s particular roof and the foot pack. A BMW X3 with flush roof rails needs different brackets to a Ford Focus with a plain roof. Even two cars with the same broad type of roof rail might need different fitting kits if the rails are a different width or sit in a different position. The fitting kit is what actually makes a system “compatible” with one specific car.
Finally there’s the clamping method itself, which depends on your car’s roof type: clipping to existing rails (raised or flush), using pre-installed fixed points, or clamping via the door frame if the roof is plain. Each method needs different hardware entirely.
Why roof rails matter, or don’t
Your roof type is the first filter for what bars will work, so it’s worth knowing which category your car falls into.
Raised roof rails are the visible channels running front to back that sit proud of the roof surface, the kind you can slide a hand underneath. A lot of older SUVs and estates came with these as standard. Bars designed for raised rails sit on top and clamp down firmly.
Flush roof rails are still channels running front to back, but integrated into the roof so they don’t stick up, a common styling choice on more modern cars. Bars designed for flush rails have foot packs that sit on top of the flush rail and clamp down into the channel itself.
Fixed points are small pre-installed sockets on the roof, usually two towards the front and two towards the back, often hidden under removable covers. Cars with a seemingly “plain” roof sometimes have these tucked away. Fixed point bars use foot packs that screw or clip directly into the sockets, and this tends to be the most secure method where it’s available.
A plain roof with no rails and no fixed points is increasingly common on newer cars. There’s nothing pre-installed to attach to, so the bars have to clamp using the door frame as an anchor point instead. This needs a proper clamping foot pack matched to your specific roof shape.
Bar length, weight and why they both matter
Once you know your roof type, the next question is bar length. Most roof bars come in 119cm, 127cm and 135cm lengths, and which one you need depends on your roof’s width. A bar that’s too short for your car won’t sit securely. One that’s too long will overhang oddly and may not clamp evenly either. Your car’s fitting kit specification will tell you the correct length, and if a used listing quotes the wrong one for your car, it’s worth moving on.
Weight limits matter just as much. Most roof bar systems are rated somewhere between 75kg and 100kg, and some cars have lower limits than others depending on how the roof is engineered. A roof tent might weigh 85kg, which is fine for a system rated to 100kg but would exceed one rated to 75kg. Your car’s handbook will state the absolute maximum roof load your specific vehicle can handle, and that figure, not the bars’ rating, is your real ceiling.
Why you can’t just swap bars between cars
Say you have a complete Thule WingBar Evo setup for an Audi A4 with flush roof rails. Could you use it on a BMW X3 that also has flush rails? Probably not, even though both cars share the same broad roof type.
The A4’s flush rails are a specific width, and the BMW’s are a different width. The foot pack on the A4 setup is designed to clamp into that A4-width rail. On the BMW it might not clamp evenly, could damage the rail, or simply rattle because there’s a gap between clamp and rail. The fitting kit brackets are also shaped around the A4’s roof and its load-bearing points, which sit in a different place on the BMW. Bolting an A4 fitting kit onto a BMW roof risks placing stress exactly where the roof isn’t designed to take it. Even the bar length matters here: 127cm might suit the A4’s roof width perfectly while being noticeably wrong for the X3.
This is why cross-car compatibility is mostly a myth in practice. Bars and foot packs might look identical in a listing photo, but the fitting kit is what actually ties a system to one specific car.
When compatibility genuinely works
There are a handful of situations where roof bars do transfer between cars.
Within the same model family, a manufacturer sometimes keeps the same roof rails, rail width and load points across several generations. A Thule kit built for a 2015 Focus might well work on a 2018 Focus with an identical roof, though it’s still worth checking with a dealer, since trim levels occasionally carry different rail specs even within one generation.
Some aftermarket brands also build genuinely modular systems designed around swapping fitting kits while keeping the same bars and foot pack. Thule does this to a degree. The catch is you’re still buying a new fitting kit for each car, so it isn’t really cheaper than buying the right kit from scratch, just more convenient if you already own the bars.
For a single weekend’s use where clamp security isn’t being pushed hard, you might get away with a less-than-ideal setup. But if bars are staying on the car for months, or being fitted and removed regularly, getting the right fit matters a lot more.
So what would I do?
If you’re shopping for roof bars, start with your car’s roof type, since that’s your first filter. Enter your registration on a proper dealer site and see what’s actually recommended, rather than judging compatibility from how bars look in a photo or taking a seller’s word that something will “probably fit.”
Buying secondhand can still make sense, but only if the seller has the complete kit, including the correct vehicle-specific fitting kit for your car. Bars and a generic foot pack on their own usually mean buying a fitting kit separately anyway, which brings the total cost close to buying new.
If you’re planning to change cars before too long, it’s worth asking whether the bars and foot pack you’re buying now can be moved across to a new fitting kit later. Some systems make that easy. Others don’t, and that might reasonably influence which brand you go for.
Why this matters for renting, not just buying

Once you understand the system, bars, feet, fitting kit, roof type, it becomes much easier to judge whether something will work.
